RIP DJ Jazzy B aka The Roadrunner

DJ Jazzy B was murdered last night and its a tragic event. He showed a lot of support to my movement, he put me on. I learned a lot about the business from him and he influenced our music greatly. So with that said, my condolences goes out to his family and JFizzle.

The story behind Eyes To The Sky

Aaight... Eyes To The Sky is a joint on my album The Heart of Stone thats been gettin a lot of attention... How that joint came together... My boy Jfizzle and I were in the studio messing with a new keyboard we just got... A Yamaha Motif ES rack... and the guitars in the Motif were amazing! So I loaded up the MPC2500 and started on the drum track while Jfizzle was messing with licks on the guitar patch. So the drums got layed, going for a more lively/radio friendly style with a Mannie Fresh type drum roll and live drum rolls at every 4 bars...

So JFizzle started laying down the guitar riffs, some with overdrive, pitchbend from the Motif. The track started coming together... The bass was laid down, synths were added and there it was.... the beat called "My Ambition". 

At 1st it wasn't Kmnite style, it was a bit too poppy/clean for his style at that point in his career... Both JFizzle and Kmnite said that it sounded more JG-ish. (Another artist from The Cayman Islands) So I sent the track over to JG via email. He gave us some input, that we used to evolve the beat slightly. Made it more energized and Live sounding, a more heavy sound to it.... 

Once we finished the beat, Kmnite went in the booth and wanted to spit sumthin on it... He mumbled "eyes to the sky..."...."feet on the ground"... playing around with the words in his head. Using a new style he was trying where he doesnt write, he just freestyle the lyrics, similar to Jay Zs style... It ended up "eyes to the sky, feet on the ground, body on earth, soul in the clouds, your my heart.. You gotta bang it loud"... the last line was later changed to "Im tryna make you proud" when J Nezzie (Jasen Campbell) recorded Kmnite in the final recordings.

J Nezzie really made the hook what it is, a catchy hard hitting hook. The addlibs on the hook was all his idea...

Then Kmnite spat 3 verses, all of which were very lyrical and had hidden meanings for just about every line. This complicated content and slick wordplay caused JNezzie to tell Nite to change some of the words.... But stubborn Kmnite said "na, if they dont get it, they not spose to"... refusing to dumb it down...

Even if you dont get all the lyrics from Eyes To The Sky... the basic meaning of the lyrics are about death, life, the struggle and his drive to stay alive on a earth that most times is a battle to achieve what you want in life.

Keep your eyes to the sky... theres always HOPE of a better day.
